Campaign to fix Britain’s Internet

By visiting www.fixbritainsinternet.co.uk and providing your e-mail address and postcode an automatic email will be sent to your local MP and to Sharon White, the CEO of Ofcom lobbying for superfast optical fibre broadband – only 50% of rural communities get speeds of more than 10Mbit/s.  If we can reach 100,000 signatories we can also ask for a debate in Parliament.

Nearly every broadband provider in Britain depends on the national network, Openreach. Through taxpayer money and part of your bill, BT is paid billions to maintain the network. But it isn’t delivering. Millions of homes and businesses don’t have the fast, reliable internet they need. Everyone deserves better broadband.  This summer, for the first time, you have the power to make a difference. Ofcom, the industry regulator, has launched a public consultation on what changes are needed and they want to know what you think.  If you think your family or business deserves better internet, email Ofcom and have your say. This is a once in a decade chance to make your voice heard.

Writing to Ofcom could help give Britain the internet that we deserve. BT is paid to maintain the national network, but even the regulator says it’s not good enough.  BT is spending billions buying the rights for televised football, rather than investing this money in Britain’s broadband infrastructure.  Through taxpayer money and part of your bill, BT is paid billions to maintain the network. But in rural areas, nearly half of premises can’t get speeds above 10Mbit/s.  BT has kept Openreach reliant on copper rather than investing in state of the art pure fibre like other countries. Copper is up to 100 times slower and far less reliable. Writing to Ofcom could help give Britain the internet that we deserve. BT is paid to maintain the national network, but even the regulator says it’s not good enough.

Fix Britain’s Internet is a campaign that aims to fight for the best possible internet for Britain’s communities. The campaign was started by an industry coalition comprising Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone and the Federation of Communication Services – and we’re growing every day.

We represent millions of consumers and businesses who rely on Openreach, but are let down every day, struggling to get the internet speeds they need. Together, we’re asking Ofcom to be brave and make bold changes to create an Openreach that delivers the broadband Britain deserves.

The Vicar’s Letter

Dear Friends,

On the day that I sat down to write this I had already attended two leavers services at both Horsley and Nailsworth Primary Schools. What a contrast to the day when I left primary school 50 years ago! Here there were presentations by the children, and tothe children, sweatshirts handed out by the friends and enough sobbing to fill a swimming pool.It was all very emotional. But then any sort of leaving is emotional whether it is a chosen move or one that we simply have to endure like a bereavement.

Our whole life is a journey – a series of leaving behind as each new day takes the place of the one before. We don’t know what that day will bring, let alone the ones that follow.

We like to try to make plans in order to keep some sort of control over our lives, but events and other people can often scupper them. That may make us very uneasy. Some people may be facing, even now, a very uncertain future for all sorts of reasons.

Psalm 121, written many centuries ago, suggests that we will never be alone in those moments. The writer has obviously experienced troubled times, yet finds reassur- ance in God’s continuing presence with him, no matter what. The final verse goes like this: “the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and evermore”.

Wherever life may lead you, may you know that God walks with you every step of the way.

With every blessing,

Rev. Mike Smith

800th Anniversary of the Coronation of Henry III

Henry III was the only English monarch since 1066 not crowned in Westminster Abbey, and it took place in Gloucester Cathedral 800 years ago. A variety of events have been planned in the Cathedral for September and October this year.

Church Restoration plans this Autumn

On 28 July we were visited by a delegation of Diocesan fabric experts from Gloucester to view and discuss our plans for further restoration work. As a result of its Grade II* listed status, the building is heavily protected by both ecclesiastical and local government authorities.  They were in agreement with our objectives and plans, and will support the programme as it passes through the necessary authorisation process. The architect is working on the plans for groundwater drainage around the tower and the north porch in order to reduce the dampness inside the building.

The enclosed Appeal Pamphlet presents more information which we hope will encourage parishioners to contribute generously to the cost of the work. We will also be approaching recognised charitable trusts who generally support such projects.

There is no God

There is no God, the wicked saith, and truly it’s a blessing,
For what he might have done with us it’s better only guessing.

There is no God, a youngster thinks, or really if there may be,
He surely didn’t mean a man always to be a baby.

There is no God, or if there is, the tradesman thinks, ’twere funny
If he should take it ill in me to make a little money.

Whether there be, the rich man says, it matters very little,
For I and mine, thank somebody, are not in want of victual.

Some others also to themselves, who scarce so much as doubt it,
Think there is none when they are well, and do not think about it.

But country folk who live beneath the shadow of the steeple,
The parson and the parson’s wife, and mostly married people,

Youths green and happy in first love, so thankful for illusion,
And men caught out in what the world calls guilt, in first confusion,

And almost every one when age, disease or sorrows strike him,
Inclines to think there is a God, or something very like him.

Arthur Hugh Clough

Pippa’s Song

The year’s at the spring,
And day’s at the morn;
The hill-side’s dew-pearl’d;
The lark’s on the wing;
The snail’s on the thorn;
God’s in His heaven –
All’s right with the world!

Knowledge of Scripture

(Origen 185 ~ 254 AD)

Lord, inspire us to read your Scriptures and meditate upon them day and night.We beg you to give us real understanding of what we need, that we in turn may put its precepts into practice. Yet we know that understanding and good intentions are worthless, unless rooted in your graceful love. So we ask that the words of Scriptures may also be not just signs on a page, but channels of your grace into our hearts.

For the Children:

Sand between the toes

I went down to the shouting sea,
Taking Christopher down with me,
For Nurse had given us sixpence each –
And down we went to the beach.

We had sand in the eyes and the ears and the nose,
And sand in the hair, and sand-between-the-toes.
Whenever a good nor’-wester blows,
Christopher is certain of
Sand-between-the-toes.

The sea was galloping grey and white;
Christopher clutched his sixpence tight;
We clambered over the humping sand –
And Christopher held my hand.

We had sand in the eyes and the ears and the nose,
And sand in the hair, and sand-between-the-toes.
Whenever a good nor’-wester blows,
Christopher is certain of
Sand-between-the-toes.

There was a roaring in the sky;
The sea-gulls cried as they blew by.
We tried to talk, but had to shout –
Nobody else was out.

When we got home, we had sand in the hair,
In the eyes and the ears and everywhere;
Whenever a good nor’-wester blows,
Christopher is found with Sand-between-the-toes.

Waste & Recycling Changes

Cotswold District Council will soon be changing waste and recycling collection days for about 70% of households in the district to improve the service to residents.

In light of Cotswold District Council’s initiative to enhance waste and recycling services for its residents, responsible waste management becomes paramount. With changing collection days for a significant portion of households, it’s essential for residents to adapt their recycling habits and consider efficient waste disposal methods. Dumpster rental services can play a crucial role in this transition, offering a convenient solution for managing recyclables and other waste materials. By utilizing dumpsters, residents can easily segregate and dispose of their waste in an organized manner. To learn more about how dumpster rental services can aid in this process, explore options available here, ensuring a smooth and eco-friendly transition for residents as they adjust to the new waste and recycling collection schedules.

Extending this concept to regions with similar initiatives, like Cairns, skip bins become a local solution that residents can readily embrace. The skip bins cairns, for instance, provide a tailored approach to waste disposal, allowing residents to seamlessly adjust their practices in harmony with evolving waste management strategies. Embracing such services ensures not only a smoother transition for residents but also contributes to a collective effort in fostering sustainable and eco-friendly waste management practices.

Why is this happening?

  • Over the last few years there has been a noticeable increase in the size and distribution of the population across the District, with many people moving into newly built properties.  This has provided scope for us to improve our service, reducing vehicle movements and ensuring missed bin collections are addressed swiftly.  The rezoning of rounds will affect about 70% of households.  Once in place, we believe that the new zones will be able to absorb the impact of further property development over the next few years.

What would happen if we didn’t do this?

  • If we just continue with our current arrangements local Council Tax payers would face a large, and unnecessary, increase in expenditure on the waste service because we would have to hire more staff and also purchase new trucks to meet demands  – both would then be surplus to requirements on several days of the week.

When will the new collection arrangements begin?

The revised zones are scheduled to come into effect on the week beginning 19 September. We recognise that some households will have to wait for more than 14 days for their first waste or recycling collection after the change is introduced; as a result, Ubico crews will collect any additional  waste/recycling which has accumulated, provided it is placed by the refuse bin or recycling box on the day of the first collection after 19 September. Additional refuse should be presented in a bin liner and additional recyclables can be presented in a cardboard box.

How will residents be informed?

Last week (w/c 4 July) Ubico started delivering bin labels to the areas which are included in the change.  During August, all residents who will be assigned a new waste collection day as a result of these changes will receive a detailed letter and a revised collection calendar in a marked envelope  – copies of sample documents are attached for information. Please Note: Only those properties which receive the letter will see a change in their collection day.

In addition, information is available on the Council’s website – www.cotswold.gov.uk/34979.aspx and we will be issuing press releases and posting information using Twitter and Facebook.

How you can help.

  • Please help us to publicise this change by using all the communications methods at your disposal.  A poster explaining the changes is attached and it would be appreciated if you could display it on noticeboards. We can also supply hard copies if you contact the Press Office, Cotswold District Council, Trinity Road, Cirencester GL7 1PX.

Further information

If you have queries about this change you can find more information at www.cotswold.gov.uk/34979.aspx or by calling the Waste Hotline on 01285 623123.

Sodbury Sportive – Sunday 21st August

On Sunday 21 August the Sodbury Sportive will be taking place once more on roads that will pass through or near to your local areas. I enclose a copy of the flyer that summarises the three routes that will feature on the day. These flyers are being distributed to pubs and local shops on the three routes to raise awareness.
Our event is a non competitive cycling one and thus not a race. However we are expecting up to one thousand riders in total. Riders will be briefed to abide by the Highway Code and to be courteous to other road users and to take utmost care  when passing those on horseback.
We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may result on the day. No roads will be closed.
The event is organised by the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury and will raise significant funds every penny of which will be used to help charities and those with deserving support needs.
I would ask that you use any means possible to help raise the awareness of the event eg local newsletters or post the flyer somewhere conspicuous in your respective areas.
Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.
Best regards,
Stuart Fraser
On behalf of the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury.
